Starting Therapy with ABA Direct: What to Expect
If you’re considering starting therapy with ABA Direct, you likely have questions about what the process looks like and what to expect along the way. But you’re not expected to have everything figured out—we’ll guide you through each step from the very beginning.
Getting Started
The process begins with completing our Intake Form. This helps our team understand your child and your family’s needs. From there, a member of our team will reach out to guide you through obtaining a psychological evaluation for your child, help you determine what documents your insurance may require, and schedule an assessment with one of our BCBAs.
Assessment
During the assessment, we begin learning how your child communicates, interacts, and engages with the world around them. We use evidence-based tools such as VB-MAPP, PEAK, and ABLLS to understand your child’s current abilities, identify areas where support is needed, and develop a personalized treatment plan. This step ensures that when services begin, they are purposeful, individualized, and aligned with what will best support your child’s growth. This may also be the first time you begin to see a clear picture of how your child learns and what support will look like moving forward.
Service Approval
During this stage, our team works to secure insurance authorizations and confirm coverage so services can begin without unnecessary delays. We submit your child’s diagnosis and proposed treatment plan to your insurance carrier or payer including medical necessity documentation and detailed session requests. We’ll also guide you through our policies and any authorizations that need to be completed. Once approved, services typically begin within a 7 – 14 day review period.
Orientation
Once services are approved, we move into orientation. During this phase, you’ll be introduced to your child’s team, including the BCBA and behavior technicians. We will review the treatment plan, discuss goals, and guide caregivers through communication and progress tracking. At the same time, we coordinate schedules and prepare for a smooth start to services.
Your Child’s First Session
By the time your child begins their first session, we’ll have already taken time to understand their needs. That first day is not about jumping into structured tasks—it’s about helping your child feel comfortable. It’s about connection, and this is where pairing begins.
Your child will be greeted by a therapist focused on helping them feel at ease. Our therapists focus on creating positive, engaging interactions from the start, helping your child feel comfortable and ready to engage.
Rather than something rigid or overwhelming, you’ll likely notice:
- A calm, welcoming approach
- Time for your child to adjust
- Activities based on your child’s interests
- A therapist who is responsive and flexible
There is no pressure for your child to perform. No expectation that they immediately complete tasks.
We meet your child where they are.
What Happens Next
As your child becomes more comfortable, sessions begin to incorporate skill-building in a natural and supportive way. Communication, social interaction, academic readiness, and daily living skills are introduced gradually, based on your child’s readiness and response. This reflects what [modern ABA therapy] is designed to do—build meaningful skills in ways that feel approachable and individualized rather than forced. From there, sessions become more structured over time, with clear goals guiding each interaction while still allowing flexibility based on how your child is responding.
Your child’s BCBA continues to monitor progress closely, making adjustments to the treatment plan as needed to support steady and meaningful growth. As consistency builds, many families begin to notice changes not just during sessions, but in everyday routines—improved communication, smoother transitions, and greater independence. Data is collected consistently to track progress and ensure strategies remain effective. Over time, these skills strengthen and carry across different settings, supporting your child’s continued growth and confidence.
Moving Forward
As skills become more consistent and your child gains greater independence, services transition and are gradually reduced and eventually concluded. By that point, therapy has done what it was designed to do—help your child communicate more effectively, navigate daily routines with greater ease, and engage more confidently with the world around them. What begins in sessions becomes something your child carries into everyday life, supporting continued growth that transcends ABA therapy.
